YOUR WEBSITE IS YOUR STOREFRONT – PRESENTATION IS EVERYTHING

08.19.2010 · Posted in Website Design

You need to set your website aside from the rest, which requires website optimization. When you’re walking past stores, what’s the first thing that you notice? You may do it unconsciously, but you decide which stores to enter based on the exterior of the store. The lighting, colors, and overall display of the storefront are all contributing factors to your ultimate decision. Successful businesses know this, and take great care and consideration when creating their storefront.

The storefront must explain the business to “passer-buyers”. In the seconds it takes for that person to formulate an opinion on the business, the business needs to put forth a positive image. It’s important that the storefront accurately reflects the look and feel of the interior of the store. It’s terribly disappointing seeing an intriguing storefront and walking in, only to be disappointed by the inside of the store.

In many ways, a business storefront is like a website. The business website design will tell a visitor if they should stay, or if they should go. Visitors like professional websites that they can navigate with ease. The average browser will only take a mere 4 seconds to create an opinion of your business by your website. That means that you have 4 seconds to catch their attention and keep them there.

Branding is an essential part of running a business, whether it is online or off. The golden arches at McDonald’s, the Gatorade lightning bolt, the Nike swish—these are all images of businesses that have been branded into our heads. This is how you want it to be with your visitors. You want them to remember you—not by your low-budget website, but by your professional, eye-catching business. If you are failing to make an effort at branding your business, you will just get sucked into the vortex of unidentified online businesses. There are many Do’s and Don’ts of business website design. To get in the top 10 Google ranking, you will need to stay far, far away from the Don’ts.

Design Don’ts

  • Don’t drown your website in links.
  • Don’t place Google ads on every inch of your site.
  • Don’t include colorful, blinking, or scrolling text.
  • Don’t place invisible text or stuff keywords into the text in order to gain a high search rank.
  • Don’t use website frames.
  • Don’t use flash intros.
  • Don’t use background music.
  • Don’t have pop-ups.
  • Don’t use all CAPITAL LETTERS.

Design DO’s

  • DO use website optimization.
  • DO keep your navigation simple.
  • DO vary the style of some pages, while keeping the basic design.
  • DO keep it simple, crisp, and clean.
  • DO bold certain words in the text.
  • DO add a reasonable amount of graphics.
  • Do have an aesthetically pleasing color scheme throughout all of your pages.
  • DO add a contact, site map, and FAQ’s page.

You can have the greatest service and/or products in the world, but if your website doesn’t sell, your business won’t either. In business, it’s all about presentation. If you are unable to present yourself and your business in a professional manner, you will lose business. Always keep branding in mind when it comes to website design. Company mottos, logo, and anything else should be one of the first things that a visitor will see.
Website optimization, design, and content writing are hard work. It takes a huge amount of time, research, and dedication in order run a successful online business. 1. Great article! Would love your opinion about my website and how I can improve it.

  2. Great to hear from you Sophia, glad you enjoyed this post.

Your products are quite lovely and Websites Tonight is handy, but not equipped to really make what you sell shine. A smart new site design that you don’t have to rent by the month and proper optimization would be the place to start. To learn more about how we can help you with your website, feel free to give the office a call. (800) 381-0027
